While the French fry is a popular purchase in a fast food joint, I don't think it is the icon of the industry. It is just one side that you can get with your meal. The standard meal would be the icon.
Yes, it is true that the french fry is only a side, but one that can be consistantly seen at almost all fast food joints. When i see french fries in the little cardboard box, i think "fast food", but could you say the same for a hamburger?
