After Sherburn shot Boggs a mob formed to lynch him. When the mob got to Sherburn's house, after being convinced lynching him was the right thing to do for revenge, Sherburn found it amusing. He pointed out that the mob had only formed because someone convinced them it was the thing to do; they did not form together because they themselves were outraged at his act. He also said that they wouldn't not have the courage to do it in the daylight or by themselves anyways. He shows the people, and the readers, that most ideas that require some amount of courage are not our own, nor do we drive ourselves to do it. The ideas and encouragement comes from others. Huck is a good example of a person who follows others because he longs to find someone to be a father figure and has not yet stepped up to be his own person yet.
