Fast Food Nation Ch 5

Although the French Fry is a one of the nation's favorite fast food items, it is not the icon of the fast food industry. The French Fry is not the icon of the fast food industry for several reasons, but one important reason is that the signs and slogans of the various companies are more easily associated with that particular business than the French Fry. For example, almost anyone can spot the McDonald's "M", the Burger King sign, the Wendy's girl, or KFC's Colonel Sanders; almost as easily, people will recognize slogans such as "I'm lovin' it" or "have it your way". This shows that people will make a faster connection to the fast food industry through these signs and slogans than they would with the French Fry. Furthermore, the French Fry is sold at almost any restaurant in America, from fast food to steakhouses. Thus making it less of a fast food icon, but more of an "American food icon"...which is pretty ironic.

  1. You bring up a very valid point, but what i was referring to is food wise. When you see fries in one of those little cardboard boxes, do you think "steakhouse", probably not. Although fries are an "American Food Icon", to me they represent fast food.
