Fast Food Nation Ch 4

Although the low prices that the fast food restaurants set are highly appealing to the lower/middle classes, an equally important factor to consider is the convenience of buying from a fast food restaurant. Let's look at a typical middle/lower class family, mom and dad work all day long, the kids are in school for most of the day, but even when work and school is over, the day is far from over. Mom rushes home so she can get her kids to practice on time, stopping at McDonalds or Burger King so that her children can have dinner. This is viewed as a win-win, cheap prices, convenience, and the children are getting something that they are actually going to eat and enjoy. However, this does not mean the low prices are not a very important factor in why lower and middle class individuals consume fast food. Although fast food burgers taste pretty good, I can not imagine myself, or anyone else for that matter, paying five dollars for one. So in that aspect, the low prices are very important in drawing in customers.

  1. Yeah, the fast food industry does rely on low prices and convience rather than the quality of the food. But I think fond memories and the casualness of the atmosphere plays a large role as well.
