In chapters 28 through 31, Huckleberry Finn makes a very hard choice on telling the truth to Miss Mary Jane about her frauds for uncles. As he was walking by Miss Mary Jane’s room he heard her crying and proceeded to open the door and make sure she was okay. After doing this and listening to her explanation of why she was so upset, Huck told her the truth and while he was hesitant at first he was able to quickly and correctly pick the choice that was the right thing to do even though it was not easy. By reading the previous chapters you learn that this is out of the ordinary for Huck’s behavior. This could be a sign from the author to the reader that not only Huck’s character or maturity is building on the river, but the character of Huck on land and the correct way to interact with people is building as well. It seems as if for Huck it has not really been that difficult past that has caused him to mature, but the interactions he has had with different people on his journey and the opinions he has formed on what is right or wrong through this experience.
