Chapter 1-6 of Huckleberry Finn

In the first six chapters of Huckleberry Finn, we can conclude that Huck is a very self- reliant child. He was forced to be raised in a lifestyle that he did not prefer, but got over that because it was better than being cared for by his abusive father. Huck then lives his life as a follower and bystander, because he is afraid to be anything else. He is growing up and getting an edjucation, but with a friend like Tom Sawyer, he is influenced into becoming a robber, but you see his opinions coming out and he starts to annoy Tom by asking questions that make sense, but that Tom refuses to answer, because he does not want to be outsmarted. Huck has a lot of curiosity and common sense, because even when everyone thinks his father is dead, he is smart enough to figure out that everyone is wrong. He continues to wonder about it, because he wonders what his father will do if he were to return. And when he does return, Huck does not know how to react. This becomes apparent when he says, "I Reckoned i was scared now, too; but in a minute i see I was mistaken". Huck's father is clearly unfit to raise or care for a child. Huck has grown to be so tough and smart because of what his father continues to put him through, but with all of the different ways of life being thrown his way, it is impossible for such a young boy to be sure of his future or what the best way of life is.

  1. "Huck then lives his life as a follower and bystander, because he is afraid to be anything else." Good character analysis! Keep an eye on Huck's development or lack of development as the novel continues. What is Twain saying about education in these first few chapters?

  2. I think that Huck follows everyone else so easily because he learned to follow not to lead. He did what his father told him because he didn't want to get beaten. He does what the widow and Miss Watson want him to so that they leave him alone and don't bother him to much. He lets his need to be included override his common sense, like when they attacked the A rabs, Huck knew that there weren't any arabs but went along anyway. He trusts his common sense so when everyone said his father was dead he knew that he was still alive because of how the body floated on the water.
