By chapter two of the book you can already tell the contrast between Tom Saywer and Huckleberry Finn. "When we was ten foot off Tom whispered to me, and wanted to tie Jim to the tree for fun. But I said no; he might wake and make a disturbance, and then they'd find out I warnt in" ; it's easy to see by this exchange between Huck and Tom that Huck has a lot more commen sence and street smarts than Tom. It is also obvious that Huck is more logical thinker than Tom is. This difference was probally caused by Huck and Toms different upbringings; Huck doesn't have much of a family and Tom does. Even though Tom and Huck are both mischeivious, Huck knows how to be mischeivious because he grew up having to be more street smart than Tom. An other difference between Huck and Tom is where they learned how to be mischeivious; Huck uses his street smarts and commen scence while Tom makes a lot of references to what he's read in books. It also starts to show that Tom is full of wild ideas while Huck is a more complicated thinker.

I strongly agree with this Megan, my blog was similar to this and I think the difference in personalities between Huck and Tom play a large and inmportant role in understanding the characters and the book. I think that Huck is much better off than Tom because he thinks things through thoroughly. Huck also does not become as distracted as Tom does and I think that also gives him more of an advantage when they sneak around and do things with the gang. Tom Sawyer makes up a lot of very wild and crazy ideas and gets himself and the gang in trouble by believing them. Some of Hucks resistance to believing all of Tom's crazy ideas is often derived by fear that Huck's pap gave him.
ReplyDeleteYou make some good points. Do you think that Twain might be commenting on book smarts? What are the dangers of reading?
